Friday Focus - November 9, 2012

  • No school on Monday in honor of Veterans' Day.  Let's take the time to truly appreciate those that have fought for our freedom and have allowed us to enjoy the lives that we lead.
  • Days 3 and 4 of our data chats will take place on Tuesday and Friday.
  • PLCs are scheduled to meet next Thursday afternoon.  You should be discussing Shift 4 of the ELA Common Core State Standards - Text Based Answers.
  • Falcon Express Articles are due to Mrs. Olstein next Friday.  A few teams did not submit anything last month.  It is mandatory that each team include a paragraph regarding events and/or current curriculum each month.
  • Next Friday is our AR Celebration Day.  Please refer to the email sent out by Mrs. Chelton.
  • Please check the Floranada CAB Calendar on a regular basis so that you can see all of our upcoming events.

Quote of the Week - As many of you know, we are moving toward full implementation of the Common Core State Standards.  Along with this transition, it will be necessary to provide our students with experiences leading to the acquisition of 21st Century Skills, one of which is critical thinking.  Here is a wonderful, and admittedly lengthy, definition of critical thinking:
"For myself, I found that I was fitted for nothing so well as for the study of Truth; as having a mind nimble and versatile enough to catch the resemblances of things … and at the same time steady enough to fix and distinguish their subtler differences; as being gifted by nature with desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and as being a man that neither affects what is new nor admires what is old, and that hates every kind of imposture.  A shorter version is the art of being right.  Or, more prosaically: critical thinking is the skillful application of a repertoire of validated general techniques for deciding the level of confidence you should have in a proposition in the light of the available evidence.
